She’s a woman, roughly 38 to 65. She’s accomplished and capable — a former corporate professional, a manager, a nurse, a teacher, a small-business owner, a mom who ran the household like an operation. On paper she’s impressive. Inside, she’s burnt out, a little numb, and quietly grieving a version of herself she set down years ago. She’s got more time or money or quiet than she used to (kids older, career plateaued, a divorce or empty nest or a big birthday in the rearview), and it’s made the missing piece louder. She is, almost exactly, me five years ago: successful, stagnated by fear, standing in a life that looks good from the outside and feeling the creative spark dim. At the center of her is one sentence: “I’m not the kind of person who gets to do that.” Not the kind of person who paints. Or travels alone. Or starts over. Or builds the thing with her own hands. Same lie, different outfit. I’m on a mission to show her it can be done.
